There are plenty of great tools out there for understanding people and teams. We’ve used a few over the years and they all have their strengths. But when I came across the GC Index, something different landed for me.
With The GC Index, it’s not about who you are — it’s about how you make an impact.
That distinction is everything. So many tools help us understand personality or style, but The GC Index goes straight to the “so what?” It shines a light on how people actually contribute and what happens when their different energies combine or collide.
The ‘So What’ Factor
At Mix Partners, we use the GC Index because it gets to action fast. People don’t just leave with a report and a few nice words — they leave with language and a framework they can use straight away.
And they do. It’s always great to hear feedback from teams who have used the model after we’ve introduced it to them. Some of our favourites include:
- The leadership team who realised they were light on Playmaker energy and decided to recruit with that in mind
- The new team who used their GC Index results to shape their ways of working — designing meetings and decision-making processes that draw on energy as well as job role
- The agency team who drew heavily on their biggest Game Changer in early brainstorms to help them steer clear of the tried and tested
That’s when it really earns its keep.
How it fits how teams really work
The GC Index looks at five ways people make an impact: Game Changer, Strategist, Implementer, Polisher, and Playmaker. Everyone has a unique mix — and once a team sees that mix laid out, things click into place.
Suddenly, instead of frustration (“why do you always want to change things?”), there’s curiosity (“what’s the Game Changer in you seeing that I’m not?”). Instead of everyone polishing to perfection, someone asks, “Are we stuck in Polisher mode?”
It gives people permission to be themselves and to flex to what the team needs in the moment.
My own mix
I’m a big Strategist–Implementer. Which means I like to understand the why before I move — but once I’ve got it, I’m off.
That combination is probably why I love this tool: it satisfies my curiosity, but it’s also practical and fast-moving.
My biggest watch out is that I can be a bit of a ‘bubble burster’ around more imaginative thinkers, with my energies taking me back to a pragmatic “but how would that actually work in practice” mindset. So when hearing a transformational new idea, I sometimes have to remind myself – it’s Game Changer time, hold fire on the practicalities for now!
Why it fits Mix Partners
We chose to be a GC Index partner because it fits the way we think about teams. It provides valuable data on the unique mixes of energy, talent, and drive that, when understood, can make a game changing difference.
It’s part of many of our programmes, from leadership development to new team accelerators, because it helps teams have fresh conversations about what’s really driving or draining performance.
And honestly, I’ve yet to see a team that doesn’t find it useful.
